[ROADKILL WORLD WAR I SERIES FOKKER D-VII]
And why did we call them ROADKILL???? They are just plain flat! ;-)

Without a doubt, the D-VII was the best fighter developed by the Germans during the Great War. The Fokker D-VII was specifically mentioned by name in article IV of Versailles Treaty: "… surrender in condition by the Germans armies of the following war material: … 1700 airplanes, fighters, bombers - firstly, all of the D-7's - and all the night bombing machines …". Not to shabby of a job by Anthony Fokker.

Is your Sopwith Camel looking for a little healthy competition? DJ Aerotech makes available to you a Fokker D-VII Fighter to battle against.

The D7 prototype design pretty much flew off the drawing board, other than adjusting the aileron throw , and the mix ratio between ailerons and rudder. The taper in the wing thickness and the washout were fine at the scale values. Handling and stability are great, and follow the same quirks as the full scale.

The aileron response is excellent when upright, powerful but smooth. The ailerons get a little soggy under negative G but not as weak as the Triplane, just like the full scale ones were. It does very nice slow rolls, although the roll rate drops off somewhat during the negative G portion of the roll.

With the 3-cell 250 mah Li-poly pack and the MPS-2A it will almost hover, and does a very nice rendition of the "hanging on the prop to hose your opponent's belly from underneath" that the D-VII was famous for. Pitch stability and control response is excellent, as are the stall characteristics. The roll stability is weak but positive, and the spiral stability in steeper banks is slightly negative, as could be expected from a fighter plane with minimal dihedral. It likes to have just a touch of "top" aileron and a little bit of up elevator held in during turns with more than about 20 degrees bank angle. It also needs to have about 1/16" of right aileron rigged in on both ailerons to counteract torque, like the Triplane although not quite as pronounced. Rudder response is excellent, and yaw stability is better than the Triplane's.

With the 3-cell pack, a very scale ROG takeoff can be made with 1/2 throttle. At full throttle, the takeoff will be very NON scale, more like a Pitts with a couple of JATO bottles added. As with the other WW I fighters, landings seem to work best if you leave about 1/3 to 1/2 throttle and fly it on, instead of trying to 3-point it. It can ground loop if provoked, but it's far better behaved in that regard than the Triplane, and probably better than the Camel as well. I tried some flights off the street out in front of our house in about 5 knots of wind, and it was manageable even when landing downwind (something I would never even consider attempting with the Triplane). It doesn't seem to have any of the Triplane's rudder blanking problems during the landing roll, rudder authority seems to be excellent throughout the landing run. However, yaw stability is so high that even in only 5 knots of wind, it refuses to turn from upwind to downwind while taxiing on the ground, due to the weathervaning effect. On downwind landings it will weathervane back into the wind at the end of landing roll, but is well behaved and responsive up until that point.

IMPORTANT BATTERY INFORMATION
We are receiving numerous E-mails related to problems flying our Roadkill kits. In every case it is an weight issue related to using a battery pack too large for the kit. We can't STRESS enough the proper sized battery pack should be used in all the Roadkill kits. Larger packs WILL yield undesirable flight characteristics. For each of our Roadkill models we post a recommended NiMH or LI-Poly battery size. These batteries packs have been extensively tested and proven to provide a flyable model based on the stock motor configuration.

The Li-Poly battery packs MUST be charged with a charger designed to charge Li-Poly battery packs. (For example: The Apache LiPoly Charger) Failure to do so could result with the battery pack (basement / garage etc...) catching fire. Also make sure your ESC is compatible with a Li-poly pack, in particular that the cutoff voltage is correct. The Castle Creations Pixie 7-P is our preferred choice for this. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE... If you have any questions at all about what is the best battery for your model, don't hesitate to send an e-mail to Joe or Don.
