[ROADKILL WORLD WAR II SERIES BOEING B-17F FLYING FORTRESS]
And why did we call them ROADKILL???? They are just plain flat! ;-)

Some of its airfoils are related to the one on our RK Series J-3 Cub, and the other wing aerodynamics parameters are similar to our Lockheed Electra, so the low speed performance and behavior are outstanding, a lot like a big Cub. It's set up for 4-5 channel operations (separate rudder and aileron channels, elevator, throttle and optional bomb release, the kit includes ten little simulated 750 pounders), and it would probably be a very good aileron trainer. Speeds, handling and control response are very "scale". The minimum turning radius is quite tight, and I have flown it successfully indoors in a very restricted basketball court. However, the roll rate is a little slow for wild maneuvering in constricted spaces, so it's really happier in larger indoor venues and for outdoor flying.

The kit includes four of our MPS-1A motor/gearbox/prop systems, and the sound of those in flight, resonating from the laser-cut sheet balsa structure is also very scale and quite impressive. This is a big, majestic airplane in flight and quite enthralling to watch. We have stickers for the famous "Memphis Belle" B-17F posted on our website for free download, and we're considering others for future additions as my time permits, including possibly some patterns for converting the kit to a B-17G version.

We recommend a 2 or 3 cell 1200 mah E-tec Lithium polymer battery for the B-17. If you want to stay with NiMH, we've had excellent results with a 6-cell 600 mah pack, though not nearly as good as we get from the Li-poly packs. It needs an ESC capable of about 4-6 amps max depending on your battery setup. Our favorite ESC for this airplane is the Castle Creations Pixie 7-P (in fact, that's our favorite for all of the Roadkill Series models). Either 6 gram servos like the Hitec HS-50 or GWS "Pico", or the larger 9 gram servos like the Hitec HS-55 will work fine.

The Roadkill model kit is a Profile / Stand-off scale design. What that means to you, the builder flyer, is a fast building, good looking kit that flies like a dream. An experienced builder should be able to complete the kit in one or two evenings. Each kit, comes complete with laser cut wood parts, push rod linkages, landing gear parts and most importantly, an electric motor(s) (with capacitor) and propeller. The builder need only provide a radio, battery, BEC/ESC, glue and a little time to build.

We have estimated the flying speed of these docile machines around 10 - 15 mph at half throttle. Using a Li-Poly (Lithium Polymer) you should easily have 20 - 30 minute flying sessions or with a NIMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) battery pack, 8 - 10 minute flying sessions are possible. (Flying time with NICAD batteries are about 1/2 as long as the NIMH.) Each landing gear is attached with a single screw, so they can be easily removed if your preference is to fly in a grassy area. With the landing gear attached, coupled with a steerable tail/nose wheel, these fighters are easily taxied around your favorite gymnasium.

IMPORTANT BATTERY INFORMATION
We are receiving numerous E-mails related to problems flying our Roadkill kits. In every case it is an weight issue related to using a battery pack too large for the kit. We can't STRESS enough the proper sized battery pack should be used in all the Roadkill kits. Larger packs WILL yield undesirable flight characteristics. For each of our Roadkill models we post a recommended NiMH or LI-Poly battery size. These batteries packs have been extensively tested and proven to provide a flyable model based on the stock motor configuration.

The Li-Poly battery packs MUST be charged with a charger designed to charge Li-Poly battery packs. (For example: The Apache LiPoly Charger) Failure to do so could result with the battery pack (basement / garage etc...) catching fire. Also make sure your ESC is compatible with a Li-poly pack, in particular that the cutoff voltage is correct. The Castle Creations Pixie 7-P is our preferred choice for this. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE... If you have any questions at all about what is the best battery for your model, don't hesitate to send an e-mail to Joe or Don.
